Explain how economic contexts shape independent films. Refer to I, Daniel Blake to support your points. ( 15 marks )  30 minutes

Since Independent films aren't made by companies that main focus is to make profit they need to find profit from other sources. In the case of I, Daniel Blake since the director is well known he was able to get funding from the BFI and BBC. The funding for the film may've had an impact on the content of the film as BBC and BFI like to fund films that are innately British, niche, culturally significant, educational and show British culture. I, Daniel Blake does all of these things. I, Daniel Blake is in a different position form most independent films as since the director is a award winner it is easier to get funding for it then it would be for a normal independent film. Curran and Seaton theory is proven with movies like I, Daniel Blake which couldn't be made without funding from the big companies that may have an impact on the film and if we had a bigger variety of companies movies would be bale to be more creative as they wouldn't need to get funding from a select number of big companies as this film couldn't be made without help from a PSB

Independent films often have to find different ways to maker their films then mainstream films as they don't have well known actors that can be used on marketing materials. They can't have these actors due to low budget. Movies like I, Daniel Blake had mostly unknown actors so ken Loach was the biggest selling point of the movie

lower budget influenced the more creative and innovative marketing strategies, use real people and real places instead of sets, use former centre employees

freedom independent films had to highlight political and social issues, as they don't need to aim for a profit so they can be more creative and use. more genres. setting of north west makes film less accesible. Stuart halls theory is true here as ken loaches views on tory and right wing are clearly seen and ken wants the audience to get the same message and see the problem with the syse
