List and explain the elements that make Black Panther a typical mainstream film.
GENRE ( mainstream appeal e.g action, scifi, superhero or niche appeal e.g UK drama )
Black Panther has main stream appeal as it is a super hero, science fiction, action film. These genres are mainstream ad bring in a massive audience and appeal to almost everyone.
NARRATIVE ( straightforward and clear story with action elements, upbeat ending etc. or experimental structure and downbeat/sad ending )
Black Panther takes the basic plot structure of a marvel film and innovates creating a familiar but different narrative. A main example of this is afrofutrism. Black Panther develops an afro futuristic world in black panther through Wakanda a scientifically advanced African country. The mix of an African country being the main setting for the movie and science fiction being one of the genres makes the film afro futuristic. The story is straight forward but takes some unconventionally decisions like the protagonist seemingly dying half way through the story and one of the antagonist killing another antagonist halfway through the movie. The ending is a happy ending and leaves the story not only on a good note but sets up a better future for the whole cinematic universe but also has downbeat/sad elements like the death of the sympathetic antagonist and one antagonist killing the other in a twist half way through. This gives the film mainstream appeal as it uses a clear story that mainstream audiences and people that don't watch too many superheroes movies can easily understand but it switches up the formula to entertain marvel fans so the movie isn't stale for them.
STARS ( mainstream stars that would also increase budget/possible profits/size of audience ? )
The main star is Chadwick Boseman, he was a relatively a big star with his breakout hit being him starring in 42. The biggest star in the movie was the main antagonist, Micheal B Jordan. Micheal B Jordan would have increased the budget but for a Disney movie it wouldn't have been problematic to find this money and it would have brought in a large audience making the film more profitable as he starred in creed with was a blockbuster movie from 3 years before the release of Black Panther.
AUDIENCE ( niche/mainstream , age/gender , preexisting audience ? wide range ?)
This film is aimed at a mainstream audience for every age group and gender. The pre-existing audience would be fans of superhero movies and black cinema. Also people that are fans of the actors that are in the movie.
FRANCHISE ( is film a sequel, a spinoff, or part of existing franchise or range of films that would help maximise audience and profits )
This film is not a sequel but the plot directly follows on from Captain America: Civil War. It is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and is the 18th film in the universe. This would help bring in a bigger audience because anyone already invested in the Marvel Cinematic Universe would automatically want to watch this movie to see what effects it has on the universe. The movie also doesn't exclude people that aren't familiar with the universe as the film doesn't advertise itself as the 18th film in a franchise which would make people feel like they have to watch the other 17 movies first but instead advertises itself as the first black Panther film, this welcomes new comers and makes it a good point to start an interest in the marvel cinematic universe as the film has aspects that would interest someone that wouldn't be interested in marvel films, like its focus on afrofutrism, so this could be a starting point to get them to be intrested in the other movies, bringing a larger audience and more money to the franchise.
PRODUCER ( who made the film ? )
Kevin Feige is the producer and he has produced all other movies in the (MCU) this makes sense to give the whole of the MCU a sense of consistency. Feige said that Marvel was considering minority writers and directors for the film, but would prioritise "the best filmmakers, the best writers, the best directors possible. So I'm not going to say for sure that we're going to hire from any one demographic".
OWNERSHIP ( small independent company or global multinational corporation )
Black Panther aswell as the whole of marvel is owned by Disney. This means Disney can fund the whole film as they are a global multinational corporation and not have too rely on money form other companies.
BUDGET ( small or large, production.marketing etc.)
The film had a very large budget of $200 million. Marketing was a large focus for Disney and came with a mix of generic marketing e.g adverts and getting big celebrities like kendrick Lamar involved and a big part of the black panther album to bring in his fans, to more dynamic marketing like social media.
The first College Football Playoff National Championship halftime show was organized by Disney for the 2018 championship game, with Kendrick Lamar performing to promote Black Panther: The Album and the beginning of ticket sales for the film.
By February 12, Black Panther was the most-tweeted about film of 2018 with more than 5 million tweets globally and in mid-March it became the most-tweeted-about film ever with 35 million.
Marvel Studios formed a partnership with Lexus on the film, with the 2018 Lexus LC being featured in it. The partnership produced a graphic novel, Black Panther: Soul of a Machine, which was released in December 2017.A concept coupe from Lexus inspired by the character; and a Super Bowl LII commercial featuring Boseman, Gurira and Wright, which had 4.3 million views on social media after its Super Bowl airing, according to RelishMix.
A partnership with Lexus and a Super Bowl advert prove how serious Disney were about advertising this movie. These kinds of marketing could only be done by companies with a lot of money like Disney
DISTRIBUTION (small amount of targeted cinemas or wide release schedule across different formats and platforms)
This was a wide release shown at practically every cinema on
PROFITS AND RECEPTION ( How much money has the film made so far ? )
The film made an astounding $1.3 billion at box office
It became the highest-grossing solo superhero film, the third-highest-grossing film of the MCU and superhero film overall, the ninth-highest-grossing film of all time, and the highest-grossing film by a black director. It is the fifth MCU film and 33rd overall to surpass $1 billion, and the second-highest-grossing film of 2018. Overall, Black Panther had the most expansive advertising budget and biggest line of merchandise of any Marvel non-sequel.
LINKS TO OTHER PRODUCTS (e.g soundtrack, games, other films,,merchandise, sequels )
Black Panther has an abundance of licensed merchandise like any Marvel film, the soundtrack consists of an original score composed by Ludwig Göransson and original songs performed by Kendrick Lamar which would have made their fans interested in the film. A sequel is planned.
